BOTOX® cosmetic is more frequently used for treating glabellar lines; these vertical frown lines are largely the result of over-activity of the corrugator muscles, with contribution from other muscles around the eye. The only function of the corrugators is to draw the eyebrows together as an expression of emotion.

BOTOX® treatments are also used for squint lines or crows feet at the corners of the eyes and brow lines. When the muscle has relaxed and weakened, it can't contract. The lines gradually smooth out from disuse and new wrinkles are prevented from developing. BOTOX® may also be used for eyebrow lifts and lines on the lower face and neck.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

One 10-minute treatment—a few tiny injections—and within days there's a noticeable improvement in those persistent lines between the brows, which can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time.

Details of Treatment

Pre-Treatment:

No preparation is required prior to treatment.

Anesthesia:

No anesthesia is required.

Treatment:

BOTOX® injections are administered using fine needles directly into the muscles under the skin of the affected area.

Post Treatment:

Immediately after BOTOX® treatment some swelling may be noted in the area. This swelling will last approximately two to three hours. Occasionally bruising can occur. It is requested that you do not lie down after treatment for four hours, and the muscles that were treated should be repeatedly exercised in the hour after treatment.

Safety:

BOTOX® has been used since 1985 for medical conditions and for fifteen years in cosmetic treatment. Several million cosmetic injections are performed each year and it is the commonest cosmetic procedure done in Canada and in the USA. There are no long term side effects. Complications are rare. They could include temporary drooping of an eyelid, lowering of an eyebrow, dry eyes or double vision.

BOTOX® Therapeutic

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin) is a purified protein produced in strictly controlled laboratory  conditions. Given in very small therapeutic doses, BOTOX® is an effective and extremely safe treatment for many conditions associated with  hyperactive muscles and for excessive sweating. Cosmetically, it is used to relax skin lines caused by frowning, squinting and smiling.

Q :How Does BOTOX® Work?

Normally, your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. BOTOX® temporarily blocks these messages, thus stopping the muscle contractions. The end result is relaxation of the skin lines created by facial muscle action.

You may see the effects of BOTOX® as early as 1-2 days after treatment or as late as 2 weeks after. Typically, it takes 4-5 days for a full response.

Q :How Long Does the Effect Last?

The usual length of improvement is from 3 to 4 months. With repeated treatment, this duration can be extended further.

Q: What Are the Possible Side Effects?
